Title Record of Contagious Diseases; City of Sioux Falls
Scope & Content A ledger book kept by the City of Sioux Falls to track contagious diseases in the city/county. The book has hard covers covered with linen. The spine is two wooden dowels covered with linen. The corners are covered with leather and there is a leather square with the book's title on the front cover. The ledger tracked scarlet fever, measles, mumps, whooping cough, diphtheria, small pox, chicken pox, tuberculosis, and other. The ledger notes where each disease was located (i.e., a school, a residence, etc), the doctor who attended to the illness, and any notes or remarks (i.e., admission to a hospital, a death, etc). Listed under the miscellaneous section were other diseases (strep throat, malaria, German measles, etc). In those instances, each entry lists the name of the patient and their address, age, sex, date reported, occupation, attending doctor, and remarks. This section also contains newspaper clippings related to nurses/nursing, a list of different women who visited the same clinic, and a list of accounts (i.e., number paid, number unpaid, number pregnant, number of abortions, etc).
